History
Inspired by the refined geometry of the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah in Agra, this 17th-century Mughal landmark is often called the “jewel box” for its intricate inlay and delicate ornamentation. Commissioned by Nur Jahan in memory of her father, the tomb marked a turning point in Mughal design with its white marble latticework, floral motifs, and richly detailed surfaces.
Design
This pattern highlights the structure’s emphasis on symmetry and surface detail. Interlocking forms are arranged in clean, measured compositions that reflect the decorative style found throughout the tomb’s walls and screens.
